What Can You Do About Hair Loss?

Let’s start by simple explanation about hair loss

Human hair goes through a life cycle that involves three stages of growth, resting, and shedding, with an average of loss of 100 hairs per day.

Sometimes some of us experience sudden loss, loss in patches, or overall thinning of hair that might need more attention and investigation.

Some shedding is temporary and may respond well to changes in diet, certain treatments, or lifestyle changes. Other loss may be more permanent or not stop until an underlying condition is treated.

Let’s look at the most common causes of hair loss:

  • medical conditions, like alopecia and scalp infections.

  • hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, thyroid gland disorders or stress.

  • medications or supplements, such as those used for cancer, high blood pressure, depression.

  • Chemotherapy and other cancer medication

  • Stress, whether physical or emotional

  • styling practices and treatments.

There are many things you can do to slow or stop hair loss. But what to do depends on the reason why you’re losing your hair.

Let’s go through the many approaches that you can seek to control and minimize hair loss:

·         Diet:

Many studies throughout the years revealed the importance of healthy diet containing raw vegetables and fresh herbs, fish, diary products and Vitamin A to the health of your hair and scalp.

Proteins are one of the most important food groups for hair health. Hair follicles are made mostly of protein called keratin, including amino acids that serve as the building blocks of protein.

Researchers noted that eating a diet rich in protein may help prevent hair loss. Healthy choices include foods like eggs, nuts, beans and peas, fish, low-fat dairy products, chicken, and turkey.

·         Multivitamins and Supplements:

It’s Well known that vitamins A, B, C, D, iron, selenium, and zinc are all important to the hair health, growth and repair cycles.

Biotin or vitamin H or B7 deficiency have been linked to hair loss and is considered one of the most important supplements for hair health. It is involved in fatty acid synthesis in the body which is a process that is essential to the hair life cycle.

·         Hair Care:

You can maintain your hair health and reduce hair loss through maintaining healthy daily f=daily practices like:

-          Regular washing: Washing hair 2-3 times per week may protect against hair loss by keeping the scalp healthy and clean.

-          Home care treatments like coconut oil

-          Gentle styling: try to skip tight braids or ponytails that may pull on hair at the root and potentially lead to shedding. It’s better to let your hair air dry to avoid irritating your scalp. Heat stylers, like curling or straightening irons, may also damage or break the hair shaft if used excessively.

-           Hair processing: regular chemical treatments, like perms or hair color, may also damage hair and scalp if done without proper technique and care. Seek safer alternatives, like organic hair dyes and dyes that do not contain ammonia, peroxide, or para-phenylenediamine (PPD).

If your hair loss takes a more serious turn and you notice that the problem persists for a longer duration or your hair volume is a lot weaker you should seek a medical physician doctor for a more thorough approach that may include:

·         Medication:

Several medications are used my medical physician depending on the diagnosis, some of these medications are Minoxidil, Finasteride and Phenylephrine.

·         Medical treatments:

-          Laser therapy: Low-level laser therapy, also referred to as red light therapy and cold laser therapy, irradiates photons into scalp tissues. These photons are absorbed by weak cells to encourage hair growth.

It’s widely accepted that the procedure is safe, tolerable, and less invasive than hair transplant surgery.

-          Platelet-rich plasma: Injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into the scalp helps stimulate growth in areas already impacted by hair loss. Blood is run through a centrifuge to separate out the platelets and then injected into the scalp.

-          Derma-pen treatments:

Derma- pen procedure creates thousands of micro-channels in your skin that deliver active ingredients 80% deeper into the skin than regular topical applications. The underlying cells absorb the benefits. The combination therapy options for hair loss include infusing with topical medications or other Meso-Therapy solutions, PRP can be also infused with the treatment.
